Quitting heroin while working:
|
If you want to quit heroin but still have to work, then don’t worry and don’t despair, for there is still much hope for you. And believe it or not, you can still do this - even while you work.
In fact, if you still have a job then consider yourself very fortunate as well; because not too may people are able to hold down a job and maintain a heroin habit at the same time. Sooner or later, one of them has to go. And hopefully, it will be heroin and not the job. |
Furthermore, by the time this is all over with you’re going to get a raise as well; not necessarily from the boss, or from the company, but from all the money you’re going to save from not having to buy any more heroin. Only good things can come from quitting heroin.
You already want to quit, and that’s great. That’s excellent. And that’s a start. Now all you have to do is figure out how you’re going to quit while continuing to work your job as well. It won’t be easy, but it can be done. With a good plan in place, it can be done. However, quitting heroin while continuing to work is not that simple, and has a lot more to do with how much you use, how you decide to quit, and what type of job you have as well.
For example, if you’re working in a construction job or a warehouse job where you don’t have to deal with people then it might be possible for you to quit heroin on the job while taking OTC meds such as Dayquil, Tagamet and Imodium AD, if you had a low $20 a day dope habit. It wont be easy, but it can be done.

If you’re working an office job then it might still be possible to quit heroin with OTC meds while having minimal contact with people throughout the day. Yet most likely, you’re going to feel very uncomfortable while trying to sit still and work. However, if you’re working a face-to-face, “hands on people” job then it would become very difficult to quit heroin cold turkey, even with the help of OTC meds.
It would be very difficult, if not impossible, to quit heroin cold turkey without the clients noticing that there was something desperately wrong with you; unless of course, you were to take those same OTC meds at much higher dosages. And for some of you, that’s what you might have to do. |
Quitting heroin cold turkey with the help of OTC meds:

If you’re going to quit heroin cold turkey while also trying to work then it’s going to become very difficult to do so without the help of OTC meds such as Imodium, Tagamet, Dayquil, ZzzQuil, Valerian Root Capsules and other OTC meds as well. For some of you, OTC meds may be the only meds you’re able to get. However, with OTC meds you do have options as well.
For example Day 1: If you were to quit heroin today, (do your last bag today), and have to work tomorrow, then you may be able to make it through the work day on 24mg (12 caplets) to 30mg (15 caplets) of Imodium every 5 to 6 or 7 to 8 hours, or as needed. Yes. Taking high levels of Imodium works - not to get you high, but to help relieve heroin and opiate withdrawal symptoms.

Imodium is an over the counter, anti-diarrhea drug which contains Loperamide. And Loperamide is an opioid drug which when taken at high dosages can bind to opioid receptors within the intestines and thus relieve diarrhea, stomach cramps and other opiate withdrawal symptoms to a fair degree, (again, when taken in high dosages).
|
Many addicts are able to make it through the work day by taking anywhere from 12 to 15 caplets (24mg to 30mg) of Imodium or more along with 300mg of Zantac or 400mg of Tagamet (acid reducers), washed down by a tall glass of grapefruit juice, (non-concentrated). In fact, some addicts have come to feel great relief from opiate withdrawals on 40mg to 50mg of Imodium along with 600mg of Zantac or Tagamet.
How much you take is entirely up to you. And all you need to do is take enough to make it through the day at work. If you become restless at night, then you can always take half the dosage which was taken during the day and/or take a shot of ZzzQuil and maybe get some rest. But the main objective here is not to feel comfortable but just enough to make it through the workday.
The next day, Day 2: You can start off at a lower dosage. For example, instead of 24mg, maybe 20mg of Imodium + 300mg of Zantac or 400mg of Tagamet washed down by a tall glass of grapefruit juice.
Some people prefer Tagamet over Zantac because each tablet of Tagamet is 200mg as opposed to 150mg Zantac tablets. But either way, they both work fine. And it always helps to wash it all down with some grapefruit juice as well.
By Day 3: You can lower your dosage down even more: 18mg of Imodium yet continue with 300mg of Zantac or 400mg of Tagamet, washed down with grapefruit juice.
By Day 4: You should be coming to your day off from work and you can lower your dosage by half, i.e. 16mg of Imodium yet continue with 300mg of Zantac or 400mg of Tagamet to get the best results from the low 16mg of Imodium.
From there, the worst is over and you can begin to decrease your Imodium intake even more or simply take as needed. However, it’s never a good idea to stay on Imodium for more than the first 3 to 5 days tops. But of course, that's up to you.
NOTE: If 24mg to 28mg of Imodium is not enough to take the edge off then feel free to increase your Imodium dosage to 40mg as that should be enough even for the heavy user. IMPORTANT: Be sure to drink plenty of water and remain hydrated throughout the day.

Quitting heroin warm turkey with prescription drugs:
If you’re able to obtain any kind of prescription pain medication such as Tramadol or Vicodin for example, then you could take enough pain pills to help you make it through the workday or as needed just to get by, (not to be comfortable), and then allow yourself to go through a little discomfort when at home.

Quitting heroin with the help of suboxone:
Suboxone: If you’re able to obtain suboxone or subutex then you won’t have to worry about anything. You can easily get by on 2mg to 4mg on suboxone and make it through the work day without any problems at all. And if you’re going to quit with the help of suboxone then you’ll have to wait 24 hours or more from your last heroin intake before taking that first suboxone film strip.
But after your first successful suboxone or subutex induction you should be fine. And then you can begin to taper down every 2 to 3 days until you’re down to 1mg or even .50mg, and then jump ship with the help of OTC meds, if necessary.
You can also go on Suboxone for 3 days and then jump off of the Suboxone with the help of OTC meds and be able to function as well. For example:
Day 1: 4mg (or 8mg) Suboxone film strip
Day 2: 4mg Suboxone film strip
Day 3: 4mg Suboxone film strip
Day 4: No Suboxone. Take OTC meds such as Imodium, Tagamet, ZzzQuil etc (only if necessary)

IMPORTANT NOTE: Never take Imodium before or while taking Suboxone as that can cause a negative drug interaction. Only take the Imodium, way after you're done with the last Suboxone for good, and only if necessary as well.
For more information on how to quit heroin with Suboxone please read my article, “Quitting Heroin with Suboxone”.
However, if you’re going to use any of these methods above then you may be better off waiting for your next day off of work and begin to taper down from the heroin until then. For example, if you work a normal work week, i.e. Monday through Friday, then it may be better for you to do your last bag on Friday morning and then begin your detox on Friday evening. Wait until you’re sick and then begin your detox regime with whichever OTC or other medication(s) you decide to use.

If you’re going to quit heroin with the help of Imodium (Loperamide) and Tagamet then you can do it just as mentioned above. You can start the Imodium Friday night or Saturday morning as well. And if you’re taking Imodium then you should be able to reduce dosage on Sunday by half the dosage or just enough to have some bowl movements before going back to work on Monday. And the worst of the withdrawals should be minimal by then, or at least reduced to manageable circumstances. And by Monday morning, you should be ok to go back to work and stand on your own two feet.
How you quit this drug is entirely up to you. But if you have to work then it would be best to time it right so that you go through the worst of it on your days off and not on your work days. And with OTC meds it wont be that bad. And hopefully you’ll be able to work when it comes time to go back to the work place, even if you still need a little help from OTC cold and flu meds. It won’t be easy. But it can be done. And if you still feel down by Monday but you’re still able to work, then just remember to do your best to stay positive at all times around everyone while forcing yourself to smile often, knowing that after this you'll never have to go through any of this pain and suffering ever again.
No matter how we feel, it’s important to do our best to be positive around others in order to have a positive effect upon them and upon ourselves as well. And then work your job the best you can. And while you’re working, try your best not to think about heroin. Instead, think about the positive aspects of quitting.
Think about how wonderful it’s going to be to finally be free from this horrible drug, once and for all. Think about all the money you’re going to save as well. Because making money has a lot to do with how hard you work and how well you manage the money you earn. And if at all possible, you may want to seek more support, personal drug counseling, group meetings etc. Do everything you can to quit this drug and stay clean for good, and then just hope for the best. And believe it or not, you can do this. You can really do this.
If you really want it, then you can do it. And after the first few days, the rest is just a matter of time, hard work, and recovery. But if you can manage to quit heroin then you can accomplish anything in life. Good luck. And may the good force be with you.
Sincerely,
